About Worhl

What is Worhl?

Worhl is a made up word that combines whorl (the circular patterns found in nature, wood) and Warhol (pop-art element).

The journey with Worhl started as what owner, Brandon McCulloch, calls his “COVID pivot.” Up until then, he made his living as a musician and bartender but, when the world shut down and he was no longer able to play shows or work in bars, he started making custom furniture for people. People were stuck in their homes, obsessing about various pieces of furniture they wanted and so, he was there to provide.

Custom Designs

Worhl originated with custom commissioned furniture. One of the more complex requests was a custom table that a client requested with very specific dimensions, hidden compartments, and a chess table and mirror —

Then Worhl took a turn in a playful direction. One evening, (after a few whisky’s and a smoke), McCulloch took some of the scraps and made a wooden BLT sandwich. His friend Mike saw it and offered to buy it for $100. And so, the “wooden food era” was born. McCulloch then went on to create custom pieces of people’s favorite foods like celery, a cuban sandwich, a banana, burgers more BLT’s - you name it.

People always had the same reaction: laughter, then curiosity, followed by an irresistible urge to pick it up and play with and reassemble it.

“They’d look at me and ask ‘what does it do?’ McCulloch recalls, “I’d tell them ‘It already did. You laughed, got curious, and start playing like a kid—and during a global pandemic.’ To this day I still get photos from clients featuring their wooden food art as center pieces on dining tables and kitchen counters.”

Locally Crafted & Eco-Friendly

You can find plenty of cheap, wood-like furniture online, but it’s usually just plastic composite that won’t break down and tends to break easily—you see it in the trash all the time.

Worhl products are all rock solid and they are made in Los Angeles. The materials are all sourced from as many remnants, found wood, and scrap as possible without having to go to a hardware store. Buying from Worhl guarantees you a high quality, creative piece that was handcrafted by a source you can trust: a local carpenter.

Meet the Man Behind the Craft - Brandon McCulloch

Woodworker by day, frontman for Brandon McCulloch Band by night

Brandon McCulloch, brainchild behind Worhl, spends as much time behind a guitar as he does a lathe. Frontman for Brandon McCulloch Band, they recently released a 5 song record (DENIM) and began playing local shows in LA and were even invited to play a series of shows in Austin, TX at SXSW 2024.

“Growing up in Virginia, it was really common for a kid to have a scrap wood pile from “Dad’s old projects.” I was always in the garage making go-carts, dog houses, skateboard ramps, swords—you name it. I never took it very seriously though, it was really just a hobby.

When I moved to LA, I began constructing bigger things out of necessity—music studios, gazebo’s, and flipping rooms in houses. I even flipped a van into an RV/mobile recording studio!

Woodworking was always a side hustle until it was the my only available vocation during the pandemic. That experience really raised the stakes for me, not to mention, my level of craftsmanship.

So now, I invite you to explore my new collection of unique, handcrafted wooden creations. Also, my door is always open to new ideas for custom projects—no matter how wild!”
